Not many 25-year-olds have the luxury of mixing business with pleasure. Ahmad Adam Aliff @ AdamVai is one of them, but even rarer is his chosen vocation. Adam is a budding ghost hunter and a self-proclaimed spiritual consultant.

He dispenses spiritual advice, communications, healing and a slew of other paranormal services. Adam’s past clients have included property owners, buyers and developers who encountered supernatural obstacles.
For leisure, he organises group excursions and tours to haunted buildings and sites all over the Klang Valley with his posse of ghost hunting aficionados.

When we met up for teh tarik, I was half-expecting a deeply religious person with raised eyebrows and a devilish stare. After all, in his blog adamvai. blogspot.com, he had proclaimed himself to be a ghost buster who hunts down demons and jinn.

He turned out to be a friendly and well-mannered guy. He regaled me with tales of his paranormal escapades and provided some insight into his methods. Make no mistake, though, this man takes his ghost hunting very seriously.

How I started: It’s a God-given talent. I’ve had this gift since I was five years old. I’ve been healing and helping people out in spiritual matters since I was 15 years old. It runs in the family — my grandfather also had the gift. My clients are solely through word-of-mouth and references from other clients. For the past few years, I have committed myself to pursuing this as a full-fledged career. I am very passionate about it and see untapped potential in the paranormal industry.

What I do: I help people from all walks of life, regardless of their religion or race, who are facing various supernatural scenarios. Some property buyers will call me to check on a building or property, even though there’s no rumour of any ghosts or spirits. They just want to take precautionary measures and secure the property for their families. Some property owners might have difficulty renting out their houses and suspect supernatural factors at play. These are just a couple of the possible scenarios.
Sometimes property developers will contact me before they commence any project to ask me to sweep the area for any undesirable entities. Others will call me after a project has started. For example, in one development project, the contractor was having trouble clearing some trees. The tractors would mysteriously break down or their workers would suddenly fall ill. It might sound ridiculous, but it was seriously hampering the project. I was called in to assist.

My methods: I would first conduct a scientific analysis of the problematic area to filter out other possibilities. For example, some problems are caused by soil and geological factors which have nothing to do with ghosts or spirits at all.

After a thorough examination, if there is no logical explanation, I try to diagnose any spiritual interference.
If I detect any intrusive entities, I will try to negotiate with them. God willing, I am able to communicate with these spiritual entities. You have to be able to control the spirits’ energy to solve the problem. Some spirits are passive, some are aggressive. I believe we are all God’s creations — both humans and spirits — and we should respect each other. That is always the basis to all my spiritual communications.
I do not believe in exaggerating or scaring people with horror stories. I try to explain things calmly and scientifically to my clients. Every view has to be balanced — like yin and yang.
My ambitions: I have a deep passion for the paranormal and would love to develop it into a respectable industry in the country. Maybe Malaysian society is not ready to accept these activities into the mainstream, but the potential gains for the tourism industry, for example, is huge. In England and other places in Europe, ghosts and haunted tours are major tourist attractions for visitors who want to experience something different. Malaysia has plenty of historical and heritage sites with paranormal activity. There is no reason why we can’t capitalise on this commercially.

Advice to property buyers: Do the simple things well. Check the history and background of a house or building extensively. Chat with neighbours, agents, brokers, friends and contractors. You don’t always get the true picture from formal sources. Always get a second or third opinion. Do not rush into things unnecessarily. Check the newspapers and internet for additional information. If ever in doubt, call a spiritual consultant.

The youngsters from Brampton’s William Howard School are producing a film involving the legendary Reivers and starring the infamous Carlisle Cursing Stone.
It is set to be entered into Keswick Film Festival for the Golden Osprey Award, dedicated to films with a local setting.
The project is being led by pupils and supervised the school’s video production teacher Sarah Ledger.
She explained: “It’s a ghost story. It is basically about a ghost hunter who is investigating a story he has heard about and he goes to Hermitage Castle (in Newcastleton) to investigate the story further.
“He gets there and all sorts of scary things happen.”
The film, entitled The Reiver’s Curse starts at the Cursing Stone, which provides inspiration for the hunt.
Installed in 2001, it has been blamed for many of the misfortunes that have since affected the city.
The hunter’s investigations take him into the history of the Border Reivers, who rampaged across Cumbria and the south of Scotland between the 13th and 17th centuries.
Ms Ledger found that the production sparked an interest in local history among the pupils behind the short.
A six-person team went out on location at both the stone and the castle. Three were behind the camera while the others made up the film’s cast.
Another pupil is responsible for editing the footage into a seven-minute short.
Ms Ledger said filming in Scotland was a particular challenge as they had just four hours to get the footage they needed.
“It was very, very tight, but it was good,” she commented.
People taking part, range from year eight pupils to those in year 13. All are members of Activity Film, a group which makes a short film every year during the school’s activity week.
Previous efforts have been well-received at the Keswick festival. In 2009 they took the Golden Osprey with To Brampton With Love. The following year they were runner-up with The Solway Spaceman.
They did not enter last year’s production, Insto Boy and plan to submit this year as well.

Lights blink. Things go bump in the night. Shadows move swiftly in and out of view. Barely discernible sounds may be voices. Transparent, floating apparitions materialize out of thin air. Nothing brings chills and back-of-the-neck prickles like the possibility of a ghostly visitation. Who hasn’t been jumpy while watching “Ghost Hunters,” television’s No. 1 paranormal reality series on the Syfy network?

Now area enthusiasts will have an opportunity to take part in an actual haunted investigation. Ken Elliott, owner of Winfield’s Iron Gate Inn, built in 1885, has asked Darin Peterson and his Moonlit Ghost Hunts to explore this local bed-and-breakfast, and you’re invited.

“This is not a ghost tour or haunted house,” Elliott said, “and it’s not just a tag-along. Everyone attending will actually participate.”

Members of Moonlit Ghost Hunts, from Wichita and around south central Kansas, will lead the hunt as well as provide equipment and instructions on how it works.


Peterson said equipment used will include four types of MEL meters which measure AC magnetic and temperature changes and detect vibration and static electricity. A spirit box, a modified AM/FM radio, scans both frequencies constantly so a ghost or spirit can communicate over the air waves. A piece of equipment taken from earthquake research — the geophone — is very sensitive and used in paranormal research to detect footsteps, bumps or knocks. The KS EMF meter quickly samples the electromagnetic field. Many modified infrared night vision CCTV cameras are utilized, along with digital voice recording devices and several lasers with different colored beams. A modified Nikon professional grade camera takes full-spectrum photos of light that the naked eye does not recognize. Night vision monocular scope and Sony Handycams allow for long range viewing in the dark. Numerous motion sensors/detectors are used, and a DVR with screen serves as the command base.

“This will be your chance for a hands-on experience of what you’ve seen done on TV,” Elliott said.

Moonlit Ghost Hunts and Moonlitghosthunts.com was established in fall 2011. According to their Web site, it was “an idea inspired by an interest in things unexplained and desire to have a better understanding of the science behind paranormal investigating.”

Members hope to teach investigation techniques as they furnish the most current equipment in the field. They supply a location — usually known to have paranormal activity — as they give others a chance to have a real investigative experience.

“We’ve actually been selling out at every single location lately,” Peterson said, “so it’s really started to feel like there’s been some demand to get out and see some historic places and learn how to investigate.”

When Elliott purchased the Iron Gate Inn in January, he quickly became aware the 125-year-old mansion, the former home of John Peter Baden and his wife, Adelaide, held many unique features and untold tales.

“I don’t think anyone has ever died in the house,” Elliott said, “but there does not have to be a death for paranormal activity to exist.”

The inn is filled with interesting and original details such as the European imported parquet floors on the first and second floors and the sweeping hand-carved, walnut, 17-foot main staircase.

During the expedition, participants will explore not only the history — but the mystery — of the mansion.

Elliott also owns the 1889 Serenity Bed and Breakfast on N. Market in Wichita. A haunted hunt is planned for Aug. 17 at the Serenity.

“We just want the public to come in and share the experience,” Elliott said. “It’s a really fun evening; you’ll learn a lot, and then you can do your own investigating. It will be a night you won’t soon forget.”

The Iron Gate Inn is located at 1203 E. Ninth. The hunt will begin at 8:30 p.m. July 30 and last until midnight. Moonlit members will divide participants into small groups. Cost is $35 per person. Some areas of the inn are not handicapped accessible, and the experience is probably not suitable for children under the age of 14.

A ghost hunter has captured a "paranormal attack" on film, giving everyone one more reason to visit Cairns.
Kris Fox is the man with nerves of steel - although when you're in the ghost hunting business this is somewhat of a professional necessity.

But a trip to the abandoned town of Maytown five hours west of Cairns recently still has him shaking in his boots, the Cairns Post reports.

Fox, one of the region's foremost paranormal investigators, released a 34-minute documentary last week telling the tale of his three-night stay in the historic town and his description of what happened is enough to send shivers down your spine.

"It was as if I was in a crowd of people who started out 40m away and gradually took a step closer," he said.
"You would walk down the main street and get the feeling you were being watched, like you were trespassing.
"Right up until the last day I started getting very twitchy and very emotional. It got to the point where I couldn't take any more, I was sick in the guts.

"I virtually cracked in the end, I said I couldn't do this any more.

"As I was standing inside the replica miners hut, I was bending down to grab my stuff and something hit me from the left hand side and threw me across the room on to and table.

"After this I don't remember anything until the next day."

Sound freaky? He swears black and blue the next thing he remembers is being found by fellow tourists the next day - 8km from the historic town.

While many may not believe his creepy tale, there is plenty of dark history surrounding the former gold mining centre to give it an eerie feel.

Settled in the 1870s, it was the main settlement on the Palmer River goldfields and a majority of its inhabitants were Chinese miners where bloody street battles were the norm.

Believe it or not, Fox hopes if nothing else his documentary, entitled Dead Eyes Watching, will help keep the town's memory alive - just maybe not in the small hours of the evening.
