Ghost hunters coming to Marianna

From JCFLoridan: Ghost hunters coming to Marianna
Another team of ghost hunters is coming to take a look at the Russ House in Marianna. Emerald Coast Paranormal Concepts is at least the third such organization to do so since 2008. The group of six from the Panama City area will be here March 3, starting their work around 7 p.m.

Tracy Todd, leader of the team, said he became interested in the Russ House after talking with one of the other ghost-hunting teams who have been to the house, which is said to have been the site of a suicide.

Now the home of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, the house on Lafayette Street was built by Joseph Russ, who is said to have taken his life in a bedroom of the structure. For years, Chamber staff members and others have reported unusual occurrences there. Objects are said to move about on their own, footsteps are heard where no one is walking, and children’s disembodied voices have been heard, for instance.

Todd says his team members researched information about the house, the reported incidents, and talked with other hunters - who have reported some minimal spirit activity in the house - so they will be well prepared when they arrive.

His team’s goal, Todd said, is to find out if they can record any activity and perhaps find out what the spirit wants from the living, if anything. He said they are coming in with an attitude of quiet respect for whatever spirit may haunt the mansion.

They use a number of methods in efforts to communicate, gently asking simple questions that can be answered by the spirit by some means in an indication of “yes” or “no” for instance.

The team uses a suitcase full of meters, lights and other devices in trying to detect the presence of spirits, Todd said.

In an attempt to draw them out, the team is bringing a few children’s books and toys, and recordings of some music from the very late 1800s, the time that Joseph Russ lived.

Todd says he won’t be surprised to hear negative feedback from skeptics, but he doesn’t worry about that.

“If you believe spirits exist, I don’t need to prove it; if you don’t, nothing I can do can prove it,” he said. “So we don’t waste any time on that. Really, our goals are to try and give the living some assistance in dealing with the spirits that they feel they may be encountering, or to try and help them determine what is really going on if it turns out that it’s not a spirit causing the things they’re experiencing.”

Todd, an engineer by profession and a former Air Force security officer, said he does this as a hobby and doesn’t charge public or private entities for the work he does.

Whatever the outcome of next Saturday’s session at the Russ House, Jackson County Chamber of Commerce President Art Kimbrough said the stories that persist about the Russ House draw questions from visitors nearly every week, and the situation presents a unique opportunity.

He said it may be a good idea to package the Russ House legends with similar accounts at other locations in the area in marketing the region as a tourism destination for those interested in the subject matter.

Getting the information to this niche market, he said, may be an idea that the Tourist Development Council’s new executive director could be asked to handle once on board. The position has been advertized and had drawn 22 job-seekers when the application period closed on Monday.

England: A Ghost Hunt Will Feature Sceptic and True Believer

From GhostVideos.com: A Ghost Hunt Will Feature Sceptic and True Believer
Ghost videos presents - A ghost hunt vigil is planned to pit a sceptic against a believer in ghosts at a mysterious building in north Cumbria.

The paranormal investigation team involved in the ghost hunt is looking for two volunteers, a true sceptic and confirmed believer to play major roles in the project which will be shown on television.

The 3rd Eye Paranormal Investigations team will feature its latest documentary particularly at Edenhall Country Hotel close to Penrith.

Sceptic Francis Humphries, who will be at the overnight vigil, said that it is good to hear people who can argue strongly on what they believe.

Graham Sizmur, the 3rd Eye team researcher, said that the paranormal investigation will be exciting and should not be missed. He added that the team is not looking for fear but rather for truth.

The specific location in the north Cumbria is still not disclosed in order not to influence guests before the night of the investigation. Sizmur said that the guests will only know the exact location when they get there.

Religion and Ghost Hunting

From Paranormal Spirit Search: Religion and Ghost Hunting I understand that we have psychics in here, and I don’t mean to offend or judge anyone. I’m just stating the beliefs as they have been conveyed to me. If I remember correctly, she asked where Christianity stood on the subject of Ghost Hunting. Here was my response:

Abby and I talked about that the other day. And I looked for “ghost” in my Holy Bible suspecting that the only thing I would probably find would be about the HOLY Ghost. But NOTHING was in the concordance about it. However, the concept of “Purgatory” comes to mind when I think of ghosts. This concept is embraced by the Catholic church and more or less states that if someone dies who isn’t destined for Hell and has not quite earned enough favor with God, that person’s soul is placed in purgatory where he / she is allowed an opportunity to gain that favor in order to cross over into heaven. If my memory serves me correctly, failure could mean a trip to the OTHER place. Protestantism, for the most part, does not accept this doctrine. I have my own theories about ghosts and religion. I think it is highly possible that maybe there IS some sort of purgatory. I think it is also possible that ghosts who do good deeds could possibly be Angels under God’s employ to help the living. I also think the opposite is possible: Evil spirits which cause harm could be demons working for a higher evil, possibly even Lucifer.

Protestantism DOES contend that if you are a psychic or medium who knowingly uses magic or psychic gifts then you are more or less “eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” (the one which bore forbidden fruit from which Eve ate). It is not for me to judge, but I have to admit that it DOES make perfect sense. In the garden of Eden, Satan — in the form of a serpent — convinced Eve to violate God’s only rule in the garden. So naturally, I think it would be easy for a person to embrace that ability to KNOW what he / or she is not supposed to know. I feel that anyone who practices this type of ability needs to be VERY CAREFUL at the VERY LEAST. And if you know someone who does it, you need to be in prayer for their soul. But DO NOT JUDGE THEM! Jesus Himself said, “Let he who is without sin cast the next stone…” So I have no reason to pick up any stones. I myself tend to be a foul-mouthed hypocrite, though I am doing my best to cuss less day by day.

By the way, some Ghost Hunters have an incentive to NOT help spirits crossover. Some would prefer to PURCHASE A HAUNTED PROPERTY in order to gain profit by turning it into a tour establishment, opening it up for people to “stay the night” and maybe witness some paranormal activity after paying a fee for one or more nights. However, I disagree with this. I like your approach better since you are trying to help the spirit get “home”. I believe this is a more NOBLE purpose. But in this day and age where employment opportunities are so scarce and employment is so brutal where people are willing to stab each other in the back to get ahead, I have to say I can see why some people would be tempted to make profits off haunted locations. Again, to those of you who are psychic, I meant no offense. Just stating what my pastor has said and what I have read in the Bible.

KY: Attend Live Action Ghost Hunting at GhoStock: State Theater

From DreadCentral.com: Attend Live Action Ghost Hunting at GhoStock: State Theater
Here's a new take on paranormal hunts: Patrick Burns and his wife, Marley Gibson, are ghost hunters and do their work with a live audience in attendance. The location of their next hunt is a renovated theater in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Venkman, Stantz and Spengler would be proud.

Patrick Burns hosts TruTV's "Haunting Evidence" and is a recurring judge on "Paranormal Challenge" on the Travel Channel, and Marley Gibson is a writer of young adult paranormal fiction. Together they've created GhoStock, live-action ghost hunting.

"They say theaters hold the essence of those who've performed there... Join Patrick Burns with his wife, Marley Gibson, on March 3, 2012, as they investigate the historic State Theater in Elizabethtown, KY.

The doors to the historic State Theater will be opened for the GhoStock exploration and investigation on Saturday night. The arc-deco style theater opened its doors in 1942 and was the chief entertainment complex for the city until it closed in 1982. In its days of operation, the theater saw much segregation with white and black patrons seated in separate areas, entering through different doors, and purchasing tickets in segregated groups. In 2009 the historic structure was substantially revitalized back to its 1940s charm. As with so many old theaters, stories of spirits and ghosts from the past run rampant here. A portion of your ticket proceeds benefit the State Theater."

GhoStock Schedule 8:00 - 9:00 p.m. - Registration and light refreshments
9:00 - 10:00 p.m. - Welcome/brief lectures/info on location
10:00 p.m - 1:00 a.m. - Investigate building and property

Please bring your own ghost hunting equipment including digital cameras, video recorders, digital voice recorders, or anything else you'd like to try out. The evening will wrap up at 1:00 am. http://ghostockstatetheatermarch2012.eventbrite.com/?ref=enivtefor&invite=MTY3MTQyNy9VbmNsZUNyZWVweUBEcmVhZENlbnRyYWwuY29tLzA%3D&utm_source=eb_email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=inviteformal&utm_term=eventpage

Kentucky: Ghost Hunter Amy Bruni Comes to Radford

From The Tartan: Ghost Hunter Amy Bruni Comes to Radford
While the event seems atypical for the month of love, fans turned up at the Bonnie to share their love of the paranormal with “Ghost Hunters” very own Amy Bruni. The evening was spent mostly doing a question and answer with the young hunter, asking questions from how she got into the paranormal, to what was the best prank she ever played on her co-workers.

Bruni shared her tale of being teased when younger for her obsession of ghosts, and also being labeled “Ghost Girl” by fellow classmates. For many young kids, the teasing might have forced them to stray away from their love of a topic, but not Bruni. It pushed her even more to figure out all she could on the topic of ghosts and other unexplainable things.

She went on to explain the job life of a ghost hunter. While many fans already know, the show isn’t about walking into a site and saying Yep! This place is haunted,’ but rather how the hunters will go in and investigate for two days or even longer, depending on how much space they have to cover. They try to prove if the strange happenings going on can be explained by everyday things such as power lines overhead, or some faulty plumbing. If the team can’t “debunk” the strange sounds or events, then their conclusion leans towards the paranormal.

Sometimes there are clear signs of activity, which Bruni was delighted to share some of her own experiences of, such as hearing disembodied voices and seeing shadow figures walk by her on investigations.

After the question-and-answer there was a short meet-and-greet where pictures could be taken with Bruni. Then it was on to the ghost hunt itself in Reed Hall. Bruni laughed saying,

“This was the largest group [she’s] ever been on a hunt with,” Bruni said as the crowd sat in the dark hoping to catch some ghostly activities.

The participants were lucky enough to have some help from the Roanoke Paranormal team. They had brought some of their own equipment which Bruni used since she “forgot to raid the The Atlantic Paranormal Society van beforehand.”

Bruni demonstrated a flashlight trick she liked to use that comes in handy when trying to communicate with an intelligent entity. Though the light did flash on and off on its own, it can’t be said if there was real activity around.

Ohio: Academy Teaches Ghost Hunters How To Get Started

From 10TV.com: Academy Teaches Ghost Hunters How To Get Started
WILMINGTON, Ohio - The number of groups investigating paranormal activity over the last several years shows that there is growing interest.

The Ohio Organization of Paranormal Studies runs an academy for the novice ghost hunter, from the setup to hopes of a sighting, 10TV’s Jeff Hogan reported.

“We guarantee nothing because we don’t know when paranormal activity is going to happen,” said Steve Powell, who leads OOPS.

A 100-year-old building that operates as a bookstore turns into a hot spot for brushes with the afterlife.

On the night that Hogan visited, he met Kim Toy, who was on her second ghost hunt. She said that although she is not a 100 percent believer, she is not a skeptic either.

“There are a multitude of explanations for the bumps in the night,” Toy said. “I’m all about finding the explanation if we've eliminated all the possibilities, then we're left with the paranormal.”

Those who attend the academy select areas that would be placed under surveillance, when every angle is covered with items such as electronic voice phenomenon recorders and infrared videotape. Investigators then disappear into the darkness and monitors come to life. Then, the search for life beyond the living is on.

One by one, investigators occupied areas and summoned supernatural activity.

Toy wasted no time heading for a specific hallway. The hallway is the same location where a man who works at the building claimed he was twice grabbed by the shoulders and thrown down on a bench. He named the character Oscar.

A flashlight on the arm of the bench was off and turned on for no apparent reason, Hogan reported.

“I think it caught me off guard,” Toy said. “Strange things happen.”

She said it was just strange enough to bring her back for more.

Volunteers mix work, adventure at prison

From Mansfield News Journal: Volunteers mix work, adventure at prison
MANSFIELD -- The annual prison cleanup at the Ohio State Reformatory is like a treasure hunt, ghost hunt and cleaning session wrapped into one.

Nearly 85 people from all over Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Michigan gathered at the Mansfield landmark this weekend to participate in the fourth annual event, and Scott Sukel said every moment was adventurous.

"Was there paranormal activity? Where do I even start," laughed the ghost hunt manager.

The Reformatory Road building is known nationally as being the most haunted prison in the country.

"There were several people who saw shadows. A group heard a piano playing at 4 a.m., that I've actually heard before, too," Sukel said. "We heard voices while we were cleaning. There were several paranormal groups that came out, and the founder of the one from Michigan, who has been in the business 10 to 15 years, said he had never seen a full apparition before. He was just as excited as can be because he saw one last night."

Ghosts and goblins aside, Sukel was thrilled with the progress that was made this weekend.

"We were able to do almost the entire building," he said. "We had far more help than we initially thought we would. In the past, we'd only do the east or west cell block, but probably 95 percent of the building had something done to it."

Sukel noted that anything deemed as having a historical significance was kept in the prison archive.

Joe James, 17, was one of the many volunteers who stayed the weekend.

Although several arrived at 1 p.m. Friday, James said his experience didn't begin until 9 a.m. Saturday. He left with the final group at 11 a.m. Sunday.

"First we went up to the third floor on the west wing and swept the whole floor. We had a pile of debris about 2 feet high, just full of paint chips and chunks of concrete that we had to shovel into five-gallon buckets," he said. "It was pretty cold in there. Some of the windows are broken out, and there was snow blowing in so much it was almost like working outside."

That wasn't the only challenge James faced.

"The dust was so thick in the room I had a mask on, and every time I breathed in, it would suction to my face," he said. "Between the mask and all the dust, there were times I was starting to get claustrophobic."

But James, like nearly every other volunteer, has a deep fondness for the prison and said even the uncomfortable conditions didn't scare him off.

"There are many reasons why we do this," said James, who has now participated in the annual cleanup twice. "It's an opportunity to find artifacts throughout the prison. It helps open up new areas for tours. It's good for ghost hunters because you can walk through the building without stepping on paint chips and other junk that can mess up your recordings. Plus, when people come in here and they see the building being cared for, they're more willing to donate."

It may have been cold and snowy, but Sukel said he wasn't too surprised to see so many volunteers come out to help.

"It really is the love of the building," Sukel said. "The architecture and the history is amazing. For some reason, this building just draws people to it."

Face of Defense: Curiosity Drives ‘Ghost Hunter’

From the Department of Defense: Face of Defense: Curiosity Drives ‘Ghost Hunter’ WASHINGTON, Feb. 3, 2012 – When Air Force Capt. Stan Maczek was a young child, he responded to frightening sights and sounds in the dark like most of us: He pulled the covers up over his head and hoped the event would pass quickly. Nowadays, Maczek sprints enthusiastically toward such events.

He's not sure what to call himself -- ghost hunter, spirit seeker, paranormal investigator -- but he's sure this is the most exciting hobby he's discovered yet. His fellow paranormal investigator, Josh Burger, thinks the same way. He also plays golf and the guitar, but paranormal investigating has pretty much captured his attention during the past six months.

It all started last year when Burger, a contractor here, mentioned his parents owned a haunted home nearby in Calhan, Colo.

"Our investigations began recently, but I've been fascinated by this phenomenon since I was a child," said Maczek, who works with the 1st Space Operations Squadron. "I grew up in a haunted house in Maryland. My parents used to hear voices in their bedroom. I figured if just one of them heard them we could explain that as some sort of schizophrenia, but not both of them.

“My father was a U.S. Army research lab scientist and very skeptical,” Maczek added. “He didn't believe in paranormal stuff -- until this happened."

Another part of the hobby Maczek enjoys is performing research. Prompted by the strange events that occurred at his house in Maryland, he managed to find some history on the property.

"The house was relatively new, built by an original owner who employed subcontractors," Maczek said. "As it turns out, he had some financial trouble and didn't pay the subcontractors.”

Maczek said the house fell into disrepair, noting his parents then bought it at an auction.

He relayed his story to Burger, who responded by relaying his own story of his parents' home in Calhan, and of the strange events that were happening at his current home. The investigators researched both homes and found nothing eventful, but the process spiked their curiosity.

That's when Burger purchased some equipment, including an infrared motion-sensor camera.

"I kept noticing this shadow in my basement, so I turned the camera on that spot and left it on overnight," Burger said. "The next day I found the camera had captured the strange shadowy mass and it's something I can't really explain. Since then we started making plans to investigate other places."

A ghost hunter’s tools are a gadget enthusiast's dream, the duo said.

The investigators carry an electro-magnetic field detector, what some folks call a ghost detector, but Maczek said it just reveals whether an electro-magnetic field is present or not. They also use Burger's infrared camera, which presents a green-tinted image and allows the investigators to shoot in dark rooms.

"People may be familiar with the [infrared] image because that's what they use on those television ghost [-hunting] shows," Maczek said.

While Burger's motivation for investigating is to debunk those types of TV shows, Maczek said his motivations stem from his curiosity, his psychology education and his religious leanings.

"I'm attempting to answer life's big questions, but with my psychology background I don't just believe something at face value; I've got to have evidence," Maczek said. "I've got to see it and record it and I've got to be able to show it to somebody and say there is a face or a body or something there. That's kind of the challenge. Nobody has really found that, yet."

Both admit that their reactions to strange events run the gamut.

"We get mixed reactions in most cases," Maczek said. "First, I explain I'm not crazy and that I'm as sane as the next person, but that I'm just trying to investigate and see what I can find out. Even though I'm in the Air Force, I'm in no way associated with the Air Force or [Department of Defense], as far as this investigating goes. It's just my own fascination."

Sometimes, Maczek and Burger said, they are warmly received and other times they are not. Many people remain skeptical, they said, but most often agree to let the paranormal investigators go ahead with their research.

"We've had only a few investigations so far that haven't revealed much, but we're planning to visit locations on Fort Carson and the Pioneer's Museum downtown," Maczek said. "Word-of-mouth has spun around my neighborhood, too, so I've done some investigations there."

Burger finds the proposition of investigating buildings where people have reported activity extremely exciting and even plans to bring his teenage son along for upcoming investigations.

In the meantime, Maczek's squadron commander has sent well wishes to the pair.

"I encourage our entire 1st SOPS team to find ways to get involved with our local community to make a positive impact," said. Air Force Lt. Col. Mike Manor, the 1st SOPS commander. "Although some people may be skeptical about this type of research, I'm sure there are many within our community who are equally interested in Maczek's work.”

Ghost Hunting Games Now Offering Ghost Adventures Equipment and Ghost Hunters Kits

Press Release: Ghost Hunting Games Now Offering Ghost Adventures Equipment and Ghost Hunters Kits Laramie, WY, January 20, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The senior writer on the Ghost Hunting Games website today announced the addition of ghost adventures equipment and ghost hunter’s kits to the company’s website. The business also offers information on paranormal devices and free ghost hunting software as well as tips and advice on how to be prepared for capturing evidence of a ghost sighting. There are many people who play ghost hunting games only to miss an opportunity to record the event when an actual ghost sighting occurs so there is no evidence of the sighting. This happens most often when ghost hunters rush into things without thinking ahead or doing things right. Another big mistake hunters make is going after a ghost outside in the rain or other adverse weather conditions. Experienced ghost hunters never go out in the rain since they know that it is a waste of time and almost impossible to conduct a proper investigation in adverse weather conditions. It may seem like fun, but nothing is going to come of it. It is recommended that prior to going on an investigation a ghost hunting equipment list be utilized in order to ensure that every one on the team is ready to capture an important moment. Hunters should also find out everything they can about the place where they will be visiting and its local area. Having the most important facts at hand and being able to understand the folklore of the area can improve the success of ghost hunting games. Some of these things may seem like common sense and others may be things that the hunters had never thought of but all of these can cause just as much damage on a hunt if preparations are made correctly. About The Ghost Hunting Games website was created in an effort to help people be prepared for the ghost hunting excursions. The writers on the website perform extensive research into how to be successful at ghost hunting and they share the most powerful tips and tricks that will help any hunter learn how to capture an important moment in the hunt. The website is updated on a weekly basis so there is always new and fresh content for the sites readers and followers.

The museum is now home to many old fire engines and police memorabillia so it is no surprise with so many artifacts that some spirits may still be still attached to them. Artifacts housed here include items from the devastation of the twin towers in New York. On a recent investigation we witnessed the following In one vigil a group of ghost hunters were using a Frank’s box, when they asked for the scanner to stop on 999, as they felt it appropriate considering their surroundings. The spirits of this building that is said to be rich in spectral shenanigans duly obliged, (a photo of the Franks box displaying 999 is on the photo gallery of the Simply Ghost Nights web site), not only once but twice this occurred to our startled and stunned ghost hunters. Another paranormal phenomena occurred with the Franks box, when one of our intrepid ghost hunters said that she was going to sit down, the song by the band James, ‘Sit down next to me‘, was heard from this ever more startling piece of ghost hunting equipment. A full bodied apparition was seen walking at the bottom of the stairs, and when our ghost hunters went to investigate if it was a fellow ghost hunter, in the passing seconds when they arrived at the stairs there was no one in the vicinity what so ever. A number of our ghost hunters stated at the beginning of the evening that they were indeed sceptics, after some paranormal activity of table tipping, a number of them claiming to have been touched by unseen hands and in one instance one ghost hunter claimed to have had her hair tugged, and as well K2 meter spikes on request, they all then exclaimed that they were now convinced of an after life. Disembodied voices were heard in the cellars, and the upper floor too, table tipping and glass divination was experienced in the majority of vigils also, K2 spikes were witnessed on request in the cells after Ian one of the ghost hunters called out for them. The most famous spirit residing at this amazing haunted place, is that of a former prisoner called Cain, on most ghost hunts Cain usually enjoys communicating with the living but he is known to have a more sinister side. On many occasions he has been known to throw the glass breaking it, during glass divination experiments on some ghost hunting nights. He is renowned for making his presence felt, especially to women, he makes it quite obvious he resents anyone daring to enter his cell. There is also the reports of an alleged demon... which has been spotted lurking in recent years sending chills through the visitors and staff alike.
