When the average person speaks of a ghost, they invariably mean any phantom object, when what they are actually referring to is the spirit of a deceased human being.
Much of the reported phenomena reported over the centuries refers to apparitions - spectral animals or phantom trains.
"All ghosts are apparitions, but not all apparitions are ghosts."
